Solar ballast mounting systems are free-standing solutions on flat roofs that do not penetrate the waterproof membrane. The solar panels are held in place by weighted blocks. The systems comprise of aluminum rails supported by brackets, with ballast blocks made of concrete, steel, or recycled plastic placed along the rails to provide stability. The ballast weight is calculated based on the wind uplift forces, usually ranging from 1.5 - 2 times the maximum uplift pressure, with the concrete blocks placed in a grid pattern to evenly distribute loads. Sunforson’s ballast systems have adjustable rail heights to permit interlocking ballast blocks that restrict movement to prevent interlocking ballast systems that restrict motion. Ideal for waterproofing warranty roofs, they are cost-effective compared to penetrative mounts and are installed 30% faster than traditional ballast systems.
